Insurance industry ratings have long served as the de facto measure of how good a fire department is. Yet the way we measure and evaluate fire departments has not dramatically changed in the past century. AAIS—a national, not-for-profit insurance advisory organization—is developing a novel approach for rating public fire protection. The FLAMES (Fire Loss And Mitigation Evaluation Score) methodology focuses more on how a community prepares for and mitigates losses than how quickly it can respond to them. This session will provide an overview of the new FLAMES methodology, what it measures, how it will benefit your community, and how insurers will use it.
