GIS Manager City of Rochester Hills Rochester Hills, Michigan, United States
GIS was chosen as a framework because the Fire Department wanted to have spatial insight into the data and see it in relationship with its community and incident data. We looked at what other systems needed to be involved/integrate. Transferring this data into actionable intelligence we gained insight, which helped reevaluate and streamline the process. The right data available is an important part of conducting a CRA, a key component of CRR. Fire departments already have a wealth of community data, mostly sitting unused in spreadsheets, file cabinets or reports. If data can be used to identify places and situations with the biggest risks to residents - and to find potential ways to minimize those risks - insights gained through data analysis can make a huge difference for the welfare of the residents. It also allows the fire department to better utilize - and not over-utilize - its limited resources.
